The EliteProspects Rinkside 2020 NHL Entry Draft Goaltenders Watch List
It’s rare in the modern NHL for goaltenders to draw high enough praise for teams to consider spending a top ten pick in the NHL Entry Draft to land one.
At least part of the reason that front offices are increasingly skittish about spending valuable draft capital on goaltending is that scouting that position, in particular, lags behind the other five skaters. Where skater scouting continues to take massive leaps; the crease is largely ignored.
Last summer, though, Spencer Knight‘s credibility among scouts was good enough for the Florida Panthers to pick him up in top 15. Panthers general manager Dale Tallon called Knight’s name with the 13th overall pick in Vancouver, making it the earliest goaltender selection in the draft this side of Jack Campbell at tenth overall in 2020.
