3 Changes Driving Jonatan Berggren’s Offensive Explosion in the SHL
Jonatan Berggren’s breakout was inevitable. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings with the 33rd overall pick in 2018 on the heels of one of the highest-scoring J20 Nationell seasons in the past two decades, Berggren’s skill level has never been in doubt. His health was another story.
Berggren missed all but 16 games in 2018-19 due to a back injury before missing half of 2019-20 from shoulder surgery. Now healthy, Berggren’s 16 points are tied for third in the SHL, while his 4.96 points per 60 lead the league.
Players don’t go from 0.5 points per game more than double that with a couple more minutes of ice time and gym time.
Luck’s a factor. Berggren and his linemates convert on 10 percent of their unblocked shot attempts – the 21st-highest mark in the past four seasons (average: 5.2 percent).
