Around the AHL: Newhook takes flight with the Eagles
Colorado Eagles forward Alex Newhook is the latest NHL first-round pick to light an AHL lamp.
Newhook, 20, joined the Eagles after two seasons at Boston College, where he had 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 12 games this season. On March 31, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the parent Colorado Avalanche, who had taken him 16th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Since that draft day in Vancouver, Newhook has packed a lot into two years. This past January, his six points (three goals, three assists) at the IIHF World Junior Championship helped Canada earn a silver medal. Last season as a freshman with Boston College, he won the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA Division I Rookie of the Year after he had 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists); those 19 goals led all NCAA freshmen.
