Around The AHL: Alexander Holtz to sample the AHL
Another day, another NHL first-round pick heads off to the AHL.
Forward Alexander Holtz, the seventh overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, became the latest player to join that list Monday when he signed his three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils. That deal will begin next season, but Holtz will join the Binghamton Devils on an amateur tryout for the last month of the AHL regular season. The 19-year-old must first complete a standard COVID-19 quarantine period.
Holtz will become the 13th player from the 2020 draft class to play in the AHL this season. Rodion Amirov, the 15th overall pick, is also slated to begin competing soon for the Toronto Marlies. From the 2019 draft class, 14 first-round picks have played in the AHL this season, with defenceman Cam York expected to debut soon for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
