Film Room: The complex skill portrait Zachary L'Heureux
One of the most challenging parts of making our last ranking was finding the right spot for Zachary L'Heureux. The calendar turned to July, so we're a few days away from the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and I still find myself staring at the list, wondering if the Halifax Moosehead forward should have been moved up 10 spots or down 20.
Is L'Heureux a future top-six scorer, a prospect worthy of a top-20 pick, or is a player who only has a decent chance of making the NHL in a bottom-six role, an upside more often associated with a second or third-round pick?
In the end, L'Heureux ended up somewhere in the middle of those projections, at 27th overall, a compromise between his technical issues and unique abilities. If we had to bet, however, we'd place our chips on L'Heureux going much earlier than that. One team will certainly value his player archetype, his combination of physicality, fiery energy, and handling skills, very high considering how uncommon it is.
