Arizona Coyotes left in limbo with lease not extended past 2021-22 season

The Arizona Coyotes have endured multiple ownership and relocation battles since the team moved from Winnipeg to the desert.

Thursday, they were informed of another one as the City of Glendale announced that the club's lease on the city-owned Gila River Arena would not be renewed past the 2021-22 season.

“With an increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owned arena, the city of Glendale has chosen to not renew the operating agreement for the Arizona Coyotes beyond the coming 2021-22 season,” the city said in a statement released on Twitter.

City manager Kevin Phelps told Katie Strang of The Athletic the situation between the two parties has reached “reached that point of no return.”

“There’s no wavering,” he added.
