Analyzing the Jesperi Kotkaniemi offer sheet from every angle

I wouldn't want to be in Marc Bergevin's shoes right now. The Carolina Hurricanes' offer sheet to Jesperi Kotkaniemi, $6,1-million for one year, is a complex problem for the Montreal Canadiens, one that requires careful studying and weighting of options.

This contract has an impact on the team's future plans for their young center, but also on the lineup next season. The free agent and trade market quieted down over the course of the summer; a move for a second-line center seemed unlikely for Montreal. Kotkaniemi looked poised to take on this role to start the season, but now, the offer sheet might not make this possible

This contract is a ridiculous offer. It doesn't match the value of the player at all. The team likely expected to ink Kotkaniemi to a short deal carrying about half that value. The young Finnish center has yet to prove he can fill a big role in the NHL and his career arc as of now doesn't suggest that he is just a few steps away from such a role.
