Avalanche win in overtime against Lightning

The Colorado Avalanche managed to squeeze out an overtime home win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, ending 4-3 (3-1, 0-2, 0-0, 1-0) in the NHL Final action on Wednesday.

The game-winning goal was scored by Colorado's Andre Burakovsky.

The hosting team took the lead in the first period, with a goal scored by Gabriel Landeskog. Mikko Rantanen and Bowen Byram assisted.

The Avalanche increased the lead to 2-0 halfway through the first period, after a Valeri Nichushkin's goal assisted by Nathan MacKinnon.

Late in the first period Nicholas Paul made his mark, assisted by Victor Hedman and Brayden Point and narrowed the gap for the Lightning.

The Avalanche also increased the lead to 3-1 late into the first period, after a Artturi Lehkonen's goal assisted by Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog.

Lightning's Ondrej Palat tallied a goal late into the second period, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Nikita Kucherov and Ryan McDonagh assisted.

Mikhail Sergachev scored late, assisted by Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli, to give the Lightning the lead.

No goals were scored in the third period, and the game went into overtime.

Colorado improves to 1–0–0, while Tampa Bay drops to 0–0–0.

The teams play again on Saturday, June 18, with the Avalanche hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning at 8 p.m., and the Lightning hosting the Colorado Avalanche at 8 p.m.
