Drafting the other Jack Hughes: A look at the Los Angeles Kings 2022 NHL Draft decision

Los Angeles Kings Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Yannetti wasn’t satisfied waiting for the 51st pick to roll around. What fun is that? Sitting around the draft table, with folded hands, talking about who’s going off the board? Of course, this didn’t happen. Actually, the opposite happened. He started working the phones. 

I opened it up by asking, ‘How crazy was this draft?’

“It’s funny. In terms of crazy, this draft, in terms of our list point went dead. We tried to move up. We tried to move up from 51, and we had no chance,” Yannetti told EP Rinkside. “100 percent of the time you don’t call people. You don’t make moves.”

While Wayne Gretzky and Michael Scott should be proud their quote was used once again, in a different way, it was very apt.
