We should always try to be wary of teams that inexplicably become good for no readily apparent reason.
Sometimes we can say there's a coaching change that takes place, or a team goes out and adds an All-Star, and that can help explain why a club goes from the lower tier of the league into its upper echelons. But other times, these things happen in ways that are unsustainable: Goalies get white-hot out of nowhere, the puck goes in the net constantly for a month or two, that sort of thing.
