The idea of the one-year fantasy hockey is great. 

You make your selections in the fall with an eye towards now. 

No one will blink an eye if you use your first-round pick on a 31-year-old. You don’t need to mess around with projecting how the most recent top picks will fare in their rookie and sophomore seasons. Hell, you don’t really need to do all that much thinking outside of sorting last year’s point-per-game rate and then adjusting for new circumstances and deployment.

But what we’ve seen over the last decade or so, is a real bend way from those setups. More and more leagues are becoming keepers. The swelling of roster sizes, the addition of ‘minor slots’, and the move to full-on dynasty setups is now the more common design. And with that, comes a demand on understanding and projecting
