Unnumbered Thoughts: It's not really a goalie controversy for the New York Rangers

The “starting goalie” label in today’s NHL is a weird one. 

The league has become a hybrid 1A/1B league, teams preach the importance of using both goalies semi-evenly. During the 2022-23 season, only seven teams had a goalie make 60 appearances, that number should be even lower this season. 

So the “starting goalie” label is no longer the everyday workhorse like it was. It’s more of a distinction that in Game 1 of the playoffs, we know who will be getting the net. 

Which is what makes the New York Rangers current goalie debate so interesting. 

No one at this point is questioning the Rangers commitment to Igor Shestyorkin being the Game 1 playoff starter. The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner is still the Rangers’ present and future.
