What We Learned: Trying to understand the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins are in an interesting spot.

They're third in the league in points, with 97 from 72 games, and fifth in points percentage. So that's good.

But are they even all that good, really? Ask any guy in a Patrice Bergeron shirsey you bump into on the streets of Boston and the odds are good even he won't seem to have too many illusions as to how good this team actually is: Only kinda.

The underlying numbers have the Bruins as being a little above 50 percent in expected goals, but they tend to get out-attempted and outshot. After their road loss on Saturday to the Flyers, they were 16th in the league in xGF%, sandwiched between the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils above them, and the Winnipeg Jets and Vegas Golden Knights below.
